Meeting opened by Josh Noblitt with a moment of silence.

 

Meeting Minutes Taken By Kore Bridges

 

  • Jeff Glazier present from Atlanta Police Department, 20 years experience, covered Zone 3 from 1994-
  • 1998. Jeff Glazier is replacing Major Cavender.
  • Property crimes are down and violent crime is down. APD using Minority Report style software to
  • predict future crimes.
  • Claire Farley Zone 3 prosecutor was present and pledged to take on tow truck case that occurred during
  • winter storm in January.
  • Chris Mccord informed everyone to take tires for tire round up on Dorothy Street.
  • Sheryl Bennet was present and spoke about beautification and tire round up.
  • Any code violations can be sent to coderequests@atlantaga.gov or call 404-330-6039
  • Voted on 2014 Budget, Budget approved 11-0
  • Russell Hopson voted to Permanent Vice President
  • Presidents Party February 16th
  • Pancake Social March 8th
  • Longtime South Atlanta resident Alfred Allen in the hospital.

Meeting opened by Josh Noblitt with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride 

Gloria shared about the passing of Margaret Hoard.

 

Elected Officials

Newly elected school board member, Leslie Grant, introduced herself to the body.  She shared her desire to start a community group for the Carver cluster schools.

 

Committee Reports

Fran Carroll announced that the Kickball committee is gearing up for 2014.

 

Chris McCord announced that the Earth Day clean up with be April 19, 2014.

 

Community Business

Josh Noblitt announces that Russell Hopson resigned of President of SACL and Josh Noblitt has moved from Vice President to President.  Josh has appointed Russell as VP of SACL.  The body will vote on this in February.  Russell has been elected President of NPU-Y.

 

Josh presented the 2014 budget for SACL.  It will be voted on at February’s meeting.

 

Members will need to pay their 2014 dues in order to vote in February.

 

SACL house signs are still available for purchase.

 

Police Reports

APD reported that crime in South Atlanta is currently very low.  The community thanked APD for shutting down the store at Jonesboro Road and Buchanan Avenue.  APD stated that the city will not re-issue permits for that location.

Meeting opened by Russell Hopson with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride 

Michelle Witherspoon share about the success of Treat Street.  Dan Crain shared that the Monday night youth group – Straight Forward – is going well.  He also shared that neighborhood youth are playing flag football on Sunday afternoon at Price MS fields

 

Police Reports

Officer Smith and Officer Dupart from the COPS department reminded residents to be careful of their surroundings during the holiday season.  Larry Witherspoon raised concerns about police check points in the neighborhood.

 

Community Business

Russell Hopson announced that tomorrow is Election Day for mayor, city council and board of education.  South Atlanta residents vote at Price Middle School.  Russell also shared about the success of the South Side Community Forum.  There were 14 candidates present and a great community turn out.

 

Katie Delp announced that the South Atlanta Christmas Celebration will be held during next month’s SACL meeting on December 2nd at 6pm at Community Life Church.  All neighbors are invited to attend and asked to bring a side and/or dessert to share.

 

Russell Hopson announced that NPU-Y elections are Monday, November 18th.  Any resident to who has attended three meetings in the past 12 months is eligible to vote.

 

Community Forum

Lavonna Jones with Metro Merge announced they are hosting a Bible study for entrepreneurs and business people on Mondays at 7:30pm at Metro Merge.

 

Angela Lerean asked about how to handle illegal dumping at Lansing and Bowen.

 

Kristi Wood asked why APD wasn’t sending a regular officer to the SACL meetings.  Russell said he continues to put pressure on Major Cavendar to ensure we have better APD attendance at our meetings.

Meeting opened by Russell Hopson with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride 

Josh Noblitt shared about the success of the Beltline Southeast 8K.  Russell shared about the success of the neighborhood 3 on 3 basketball tournament.

 

Police Reports

Detective Smith from APD shared that crime continues to decrease in Zone 3.  Most crime within the 305 beat is being committed by juveniles and APD is working with APS with this issue.  A neighbor shared about disruptive behavior and shooting at 109 Thirkield.  Det. Smith encouraged the neighbor to file a civil suit against the residents and/or landlord.  It was shared that there is tire dumping at the end of Bowen Avenue.

 

Community Business

Russell Hopson announced the South Atlanta Candidate Forum that will be held tomorrow, October 8th at 7pm at the Gateway Building.  14 Candidates from City Council and BOE District 1 and At-Large Posts will be present.  All neighbors are invited to attend.

 

Katie Delp announced that Treat Street will be held on Thursday, October 31st next door to the Bike Shop.  Volunteer and candy donations are still needed.  Candy can be dropped off at the Marketplace.

 

Community Forum

City Council candidate Mary Norwood introduced herself and shared her platform.

Meeting opened by Russell Hopson with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride 

Russell and others shared about the Southern Fried Kickin’ Kickball Tournament.

 

Police Reports

Offices from the COPS department introduced themselves (Officer Smith, Officer Dupart and Officer Knight).  They shared about the Cry Wolf program and the need for all residents to register their home alarm systems with APD by February 22, 2014 at www.crywolf.us/atlantaga/.  Residents will begin being fines for false alarms.

 

The National Night Out again crime is August 6, 2013.

 

Joyce Sheppard has introduced legislation to help crack down on ATV vehicles within city limits

 

Local Officials

Claire Farley updated the body on several current cases she is working on.

 

Leslie Grant introduced herself.  She is running for APS School Board Position One.

 

Community Business

Russell Hopson announced there will be a Meet and Greet for Carla Smith and her city council re-election bid at his house on Thursday, August 8th from 7pm to 9pm.

 

Tanisha Corporal announced the South Atlanta Progressive Dinner is Saturday, August 17th from 6pm to 9pm.  All in the neighborhood are welcome and she distributed maps for the evening’s festivities.

 

Katie Delp announced that the Beltline will be hosting the Southeast Beltline 8K run on September 28, 2013 and a part of the race will come through South Atlanta.  A team from South Atlanta will be running/walking together and all are welcome to register online and join the team.

 

Kristi Wood shared the work she has done with the Lakewood LCI to improve the LCI’s plans concerning a road through South Atlanta Park.  The road will connect Bisbee, Martin and Gammon Avenues, but will not be for vehicle use.  The final vote for the LCI will be at August NPU-Y meeting.

Russell Hopson opened the meeting with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride

Chris McCord announced that there is a new neighbor on Gammon Avenue and the street is now 100% occupied.  Russell Hopson announced that he will be hosting a Meet and Greet for Council Member Carla Smith at his home on August 8th.

 

Community Reports

Sgt Brown from Zone 3 gave the monthly crime report.  Neighbors expressed concerns about neighborhood hot spots.   Officer Smith from COPS introduced himself and announced that COPS officers are willing to come to neighborhood events.  The number to the COPS office is 404.546.5650.

 

Committee Reports

Chris McCord asked for a new location to collect old tires and announced he is working with a new recycling program for discarded tires in the neighborhood.

 

Community Business

Fran Carroll announced that the annual kickball tournament has been postponed until August 3rd and the Progressive Dinner will be August 17th.

 

Russell Hopson announced that there will be another Food Truck Thursday at the Monarch Art Center this Thursday from 5pm to 8pm.

 

Deanna Christiansen from Georgia State introduced the GSU interns working in South Atlanta for the summer.  They will be hosting focus groups and asked for volunteers to participate.

June 3, 2013

Meeting Minutes

 

APD present, Detective Smith was present along with Josh Lowry of the Community Liason Department.

Detective Smith informed us that there were 7 crimes in the month of May for our neighborhood.

Business burglaries are seeing an increase.

Apd suggested those with property cameras get hd cameras for clarity of video playback.

Claire Farley our Community Prosecutor spoke about the Juvenile Reform Act.

Council member Carla Smith was present.

Jessica from the Office of Planning for the LCI Lakewood initiative spoke about South Atlanta park and the connectivity of the park with the rest of the neighborhood.

Mrs. Muhammad the school board rep spoke about Carver High School having the highest ranking in the state for the Early College program. Her email is bjmuhammad@comcast.net. Her phone number is 404-226-5484.

June 29th is the Annual Kickball Event

August 17th Progressive Dinner. Mexican theme. Josh, Kore, Russell & The Delps are tentative host houses as of yet.

Meeting Minutes

 

Russell Hopson opened the meeting with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride

Geri Colvard announced that 107 Bisbee is completed and she is looking forward to new neighbors on her block.  She also shared she is enjoying the Zumba classes at the Marketplace.

Kristi Wood hosted a neighborhood yard sale in April and plans to have another later in the summer.

Russell Hopson shared that SACL hosted another great Earth Day community clean up.

 

Community Reports

APD Officer Shiftbower shared with the body.  He reported on the increased problem with ATV on city streets.  He asked for residents to please report them when seen.  Neighbors reported ongoing problems with 1420 and 1418 Lansing Avenue.  Problems with residents missing mail on Gammon Avenue was also reported.

 

NPU-Y Chair Paul McMurray reported that the liquor license for 184 McDonough is up for approval tomorrow morning at 5pm on the 2nd floor of City Hall.  He encouraged the body to attend the next NPU meeting to vote on the Lakewood LCI plans.

 

Committee Reports

Chris McCord reported on the Earth Day clean up.  Residents collected over 300 tires.  ATow lent a truck and two volunteers which helped out immensely.  Chris will be organizing a few dumpster days throughout the summer.  He also has some volunteers coming this summer and would like to help 2 senior with light yard work.

 

Community Business

Russell Hopson announced Food Truck Thursdays at the Monarch Arts Center every other Thursday.  All are welcome to attend.

 

Fran Carroll announced that planning for the annual kickball tournament is under way for June 29th at Carver HS.  Volunteers are needed to help plan and the next planning meeting is this Wednesday at 5pm at Community Grounds.  Progressive Dinner is also coming up at the end of the summer.

 

Community News

Derek George with Doing Good Among People introduced himself and volunteered to help with the mural on Jonesboro Road.

 

Jeff Delp announced that Community Grounds is now selling Frozen Yogurt.  The Marketplace will be close for renovations this week and will re-open on Friday.

 

There was discussion about positive youth activities in the community.

Meeting Minutes – April 1, 2013

 

Josh Noblitt led the meeting in the absence of Russell Hopson.  Josh opened the meeting with a moment of silence.

 

Community Pride

Hanihah Rios shared that she was excited that 65 Gammon had sold and was being renovated.  Jeff Lupton shared that there was a successful 3on3 basketball tournament in the park the past weekend.

 

Police Report

Officer Eric Schwartz introduced himself and distributed the 305 beat report.  Crime has been down significantly.

Claire Farley reported that Zone 3 is experiencing the lowest crime since 1969.  She updated the body on several open community cases.

 

Committee Reports

Fran Carroll reported that the Social and Fundraising Committee is working on securing a location for the kickball tournament and asked for help in the planning.

 

Community Business

Fran Carroll presented the 2013 budget.  The budget was voted on and unanimously passed by the body.

Carla Smith announced the East Day Recycling Event on April 27th at Turner Field.  This year the city is accepting hazardous materials, tires and electronics.

South Atlanta residents can bring electronics to be recycled to the South Atlanta Marketplace on April 27th from 9am to 10am and volunteers will take them to Turner Field.

The annual South Atlanta Tire Clean Up will be April 27th.  Meet at Community Grounds at 9am to help.

Josh Noblitt gave an update on the Jonesboro Road Mural.  There had been a meeting with several stakeholders to figure out a solution for the north 50 feet of the wall.  Meetings are continuing to happen to secure a solution.

Terry Bailey, representation for Omkar Singh, made a request for a beer and wine license for the Food Mart at 183 McDonough Blvd.  Discussion ensued.  The request was vote on and was unanimously denied by the body.  Carla Smith explained the LRB process to the body.  She ask Mr. Singh to come back to the community if granted the license to build a relationship and be a good neighbor.

Josh announced the Bring a Neighbor Incentive.  Neighbors that bring a new neighbor to the May SACL meeting will receive a $5 discount on their annual dues.

 

Community Forum

Chris McCord announced that Moving in the Spirit will be hosting their Big Show at the Rialto on May 2nd.  Many South Atlanta youth will be in the show.

Several new residents introduced themselves to the body.

Katie Delp announced that Kimpson Park Community Garden will have its kick off Saturday, April 6th from 9am to 11am.  All are welcome to participate.
